In this modern world, the fashion of wearing traditional dresses among men has changed a lot. But the only traditional attire which is till now preferred by every Indian kurta. It is a collarless shirt styled traditional dress, with long and loose-fitting tunic with its length up to the knees. The style of kurta is originated from India, but now it is worn in every corner of the world. The men’s kurtas is a long upper body garment with embroidered decoration or plain. The embroidered decorations include chikan which can be loose or tight in the torso and extends up to the knees of the wearer. The material used for making kurtas are cotton for casual or daily use and silk is used for special occasion or festivals, sometimes for making the kurtas look very elaborate and sumptuous, the fabrics like brocade are also used.

A lot of traditional kurta for men are featured with embroidered detailing on the front placket, sleeves, and shoulder. The embroidery depends on the area from where the kurta is made; the Lucknow Chikan is an example of ornate detailing. Traditionally the kurta is worn above loose pants called Pyjamas and with the pants which are fitted long the calves and has multiple creases on the calf are called Churidars and jeans. The churidars are usually preferred for festive occasions or special events like weddings etc., and the pajamas are preferred for casual wear and also for formal wear.

The traditional kurta does not have a collar, but with modern designs, the kurta with a collar or mandarin collar is available in the market these are the same sort of collars seen on achkans, sherwanis, and Nehru jackets. The achkans are the type of men’s kurtas which is a knee-length jacket and is generally worn by the men from Rajasthan. The achkans traditionally consists of side-opening tied with strings; this style of opening is known as baghal bandi. The sherwani is another type of long coat like a garment that is worn over the kurta with a combination of dhoti, churidar, or pajama. The Nehru jacket is a tailored coat with its length extending up to the hip. It consists of a mandarin collar. This jacket got its name from the first prime minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

In the modern time if someone needs to dress up in the kurtas can also carry a stole or dupatta which is draped around the neck, but the use of a dupatta is optional if it is used can add an entirely different dimension to the look of the Kurta. The dupattas usually are brightly colored and might also feature beautiful embroidery. The kurtas are generally traditional Indian dress but with the re-invention and modern design different varieties of kurta for men are available in the market.
