The garment gained popularity in France after the passage of its controversial “Burqa-Ban” in 2010, which prohibited anyone from wearing clothing that covers their face in public. This law caused some women to stop going to the beach because they could not find modest swimwear that covered them entirely without looking frumpy. Zanetti saw this as an opportunity for business growth, so she created a line of conservative swimwear for Muslim women called “Ahiida.”

The design has since been copied by other different Islamic clothing designers worldwide to satisfy all tastes in fashion. It has become trendy in France, where it is endorsed by many Muslims who argue that they can practice their religion freely with this garment.

The New Trend Towards Modest Swimwear

For many Muslim women, the burkini has taken on a new meaning. It’s no longer just a swimsuit option but a symbol of liberation and empowerment. Muslim women often want to enjoy the beach with their families, but they don’t want to expose too much skin in front of men who aren’t family members. In some cultures, it is also shameful for a woman to wear a bikini or another revealing outfit in public. The burkini offers an alternate solution for these women to participate in activities like swimming without compromising modesty.

Modest swimwear goes beyond the burkini and includes long sleeves and shorts, high necklines, or whole-body coverage. Even options have long pants and a shirt-dress combination that covers everything but the face and hands. This type of modest swimwear might not be appropriate for all Islamic sects, but each Islamic sect will have its own beliefs about proper attire for swimming. For example, conservative Muslims might only wear the burkini while liberal Muslims might wear more revealing garments under the burkini–it depends on personal preference.
